For over two decades, Café Sacher has been a beloved institution in the heart of Graz, offering locals and visitors a taste of Viennese coffeehouse culture. Known for its luxurious ambiance, elegant decor, and, of course, the iconic Original Sacher-Torte, the café was a symbol of old-world charm and Austrian tradition. However, after 22 years, Café Sacher Graz is closing its doors for good.
The announcement of the closure came as a shock to many. In a statement, Matthias Winkler, CEO of the Sacher Group, explained the difficult decision:
"An honest economic assessment led to this difficult decision. Despite intensive efforts and the dedication of 16 employees who operated the café seven days a week, no profitable business model could be found. We carefully and thoroughly examined every possibility to make the café profitable. Unfortunately, we were unable to identify any approach that would make this realistically achievable for the first time since its opening in 2002."
Located at Herrengasse 6, in the heart of Graz, Café Sacher occupied a historic mansion that has long been recognized as a cultural heritage site. The building’s vaulted ceilings, arched hallways, and elegant interior reflected the city's rich architectural history. Walking into the café felt like stepping into a different era, with waiters dressed in traditional attire serving guests on marble tables under frescoed ceilings.
For many, Café Sacher was more than just a place for coffee – it was an experience. Whether it was tourists indulging in a slice of the famous Sacher-Torte, businesspeople holding meetings in its refined setting, or locals stopping by for a quiet coffee, the café held a special place in Graz’s coffee culture.
However, not everyone is mourning its departure. A significant number of Graz residents support the decision, arguing that the café had become outdated, overpriced, and lacked the warm, local atmosphere found in smaller, independent coffeehouses. Some believe that its removal will make way for a more vibrant and modern addition to Graz’s café scene.
We have gathered some of the most notable comments from both sides of the debate (see below):
With Café Sacher leaving, the future of the space remains uncertain. Will another prestigious establishment take its place, or will Graz see an entirely new concept emerge in this historic location? For now, the city waits to see what will come next.
